If you are easily offended even if you aren't guilty, don't read this. Yes, I am a person. Oh, you knew? Well then, you must have a beating heart. There seem to be a few people who think that books (in general) are written by machines who put in minimal effort to get their eBooks published, collect a paycheque and skip on their way - without reading the reviews or caring about them at all. They don't seem to know about the endless late nights we pull to hit deadlines/hit word goals/beta read for other authors/make editing deadlines and that's just the beginning. Do they know that we have spouses and families? I personally only have a spouse at the moment but I'm vouching for everyone else. I don't think they realise that. They couldn't. Or that we have feelings. Or that rudeness and nastyness bother us. They don't seem to realise that leaving blatantly attitude-fuelled reviews are actually quite unacceptable and tramples the incredible amount of work, dedication and saying 'no' to everybody else so we can hide away and finish writing a novel - that it takes. I don't know how someone can write 'worst book I have ever read' and 'such and such author writes in this genre and it's way hotter' Really?!? You can sleep at night hiding behind a PC writing those kinds of things to perfect strangers who are published with their work?? This is a legitimate business. We are authors. We actually write 'author' on our tax forms. It seems some reviewers run around leaving arrogant comments yet they don't write books themselves. Interesting, I know.
The following is not directed at anyone who has left either a positive or a constructively critical review for another author. This is me unloading after five months of frustration.
Next time you read or write a review maybe stop and think before you publish it because you don't know what might happen on the other end. WORDS. HURT. You don't know that at times you have made us cry. My husband has been there when I received a nasty (not to be confused with 'constructive criticism) review as I cried and asked why people are so rude and unkind about it - why can they not just admit that actually my writing didn't blow - you are looking for something that I cannot or did not provide in the book that took me 1,000 hours in less than 2 months to write whilst staying up until 3am and ignoring my friends, family, social invitations - that was dismissed with a flippant attitude in less than 30 seconds. Because you weren't satisfied? Because I didn't give you what you wanted or expected? That's not my problem, love. I'm not writing for you and neither is anybody else. Or just leaving very flippant and, ''Eh, not my fav. What a bore.'' Tell me something that is HELPFUL for me or any other author to learn and by the way, if you bought the book, you keep the book.
It all boils down to what your mother or father probably did or should have taught - if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. If you didn't like a book find a kind and constructive way to tell the author WHY you didn't like it - without being dismissive and rude.
If you want to read my blog than you will get to know all parts of me, not just the lovely happy writer Bella who pumps out a book every eight weeks. You get to see that I hate injustice, unkindness and rudeness. This post is coming from a very disappointed writer who is upset when she sees reviews that hurt other authors or when they hurt me. And don't compare us - I am Bella, I write sweet age play and spanking fiction. I am not a steamy romance novelist. We all know that by now. If you want that kind of book than go for the authors that write it.
You don't have to like every book you read or even my books. That's okay! But don't be mean to us or to me. Please. It's really unfair and discouraging.
